Topics in Field ID: Shades of Brown
Do you cringe at the thought of fall birdings rumored identification challenges - LBJs, confusing fall warblers, sparrows, winter plumaged shorebirds, juvenile hawks, etc The truth is that, while cryptic coloration may make IDs less obvious, the basics of size, shape, bill type, and behavior are still the same, and sorting out these groups is possible even by birders with relatively little experience. And while the bright colors of spring and summer have given way to the subtle hues of fall, intricate feather details in shades of brown, rufous and gray are stunning in their own right. Conditions permitting, the field trip will include a visit to a local banding station where we can appreciate this beauty up close, while honing our ID skills. The evening session will provide a framework for the bird ID process, with an emphasis on becoming confident using the myriad of non-color clues the bird provides us. For the field trip bring binoculars, field guide, snacks, drinks, and lunch. - - Open to anyone age 16 or older. Registration is required. Call 781-259-2200 for details. Rhode Island: Block Island - Birding Mecca
Our weekend trip to Block Island will combine the scenic beauty of Mohegan Bluffs, exploring the Maze, combing the beaches and marshes of Andys Way and hoping to witness a fallout of warblers and other migrants at North Point. This beautiful glacial island is only 11 square miles but combines a large variety of habitats and spectacular scenery. Given its location, the island forms a natural trap for land birds that have overshot the Rhode Island coastline on their southward migration. Besides these passerine migrants, the island has several locations for resting and feeding shorebirds and oceanbirds. This weekend trip will start with our ferry ride to the island which should produce shearwaters and petrels plus a few early sea ducks. Once on the island, we will spend a lot of our time birding the North Point area looking for many species of warblers, vireos, and woodpeckers as well as visiting a nearby banding site. We will explore the Maze - a series of winding paths through low scrub vegetation - for mixed flocks of migrants. At Andys Way, we will find shorebirds, bitterns and herons including Yellow-crowned Night Heron. If the Barn Owls are in the Southwest fields, we will head out at dusk to catch them hunting mice. In the end, you will know Block Island in depth with all its charm, beauty and diverse bird population. Being such a small island, we are always near our hotel, short drives to each site, great seafood - basically a semi-relaxing trip with awesome birds and beautiful habitats - - Fee: TBD - - This program is open to anyone age 18 and older. Please write or call for complete itinerary: 781-259-2206 or jriley@massaudubon.org. Registration is required. Call 781-259-2200 for details. California: Fall Coastal Birding
Join us for this glorious adventure birding the California coastline from San Francisco to Monterey. We start our adventure in San Jose, as we head off to look for Burrowing Owl, Long-billed Curlew, and many other shorebirds and migrants. From there we drive to the Mt Hamilton area of the coastal Range which has a variety of habitats - forest, ponds, grasslands - where we will look for Yellow-billed Magpie, Golden Eagle, Lawrences Goldfinch, and Lewis Woodpecker and many other resident species. AS we travel down the San Mateo County coast well encounter many stops for both birds and spectacular scenery. We will see many species of shorebirds (Black Turnstone, Surfbird, etc), several species of gulls and terns, alcids (Marbled Murrelet, Pigeon Guillemot), loons, grebes and many landbirds (Chestnut-backed Chickadee, Wrentit). A major highlight will be a Shearwater Journeys boat trip out into Monterey Bay to experience a plethora of pelagic species (shearwaters, petrels, jaegers, phalaropes, alcids) - sometimes numbering in the thousands, and many marine mammals. This adventure to northern California is timed to catch a large percentage of northern migrants (Golden-crowned Sparrow, pelagics, gulls, shorebirds) as they first arrive, enjoy all the resident species including various owls, and snag a few late summering species like Townsends Warbler that havent departed yet. Our hope is to see 175 species, enjoy the majestic coastline and the scenic Mt Hamilton area and, basically, have an awesome time in the process. - - Call or email if you are interested in further information: 781-259-2206 or jriley@massaudubon.org. The Town of Lincoln was founded as a town in 1754 and is located west of Boston in Middlesex County. Lincoln was once nicknamed “Niptown” because when the town first began it was made up of pieces of land nipped from neighboring towns.

There is much to see in this old-fashioned little town for instance the Drumlin Farm Nature Center and the DeCordova Museum & Sculpture Park as well as the Thoreau Institute among many others.

Residents note that Lincoln is a quiet pretty place to be weather its to visit a museum or take a stroll in the woods all year round.
